In this tutorial, we will walk you through the process of designing a new SharePoint site from scratch using the built-in design tools.
Step 1: Create a New Site
To start, log in to your SharePoint tenant and navigate to the Sites page. Click on the “New” button and select “Site” from the dropdown menu. Fill in the required information such as site name, URL, and template (we will be using the “Blank” template for this tutorial).
Step 2: Define Your Site’s Structure
Once your new site is created, click on the “Site Settings” gear icon and select “Site structure”. This is where you can define the hierarchy of your site. For this tutorial, we will create a simple structure with two levels: Home (the main page) and Departments.
Step 3: Add Pages to Your Site
To add pages to your site, go back to the Sites page and click on the “Pages” tab. Click the “New” button and select “Page”. Name your page something like “Home Page” or “About Us”, and then click “Save”.
Repeat this process for each department you want to create (e.g. HR, IT, Marketing). Make sure to add the pages to the correct site structure by clicking on the “Site Structure” tab and dragging the pages into their respective locations.
Step 4: Customize Your Pages
Now that your site has some basic structure, let’s customize each page. Click on a page to edit it. You can add text, images, tables, and more using the built-in editor. For this tutorial, we will keep things simple and just add some basic text and a logo.
Step 5: Add Web Parts
Web parts are reusable components that you can add to your pages to display specific information or functionality. To add a web part, click on the “Add a web part” button at the top of the page. Browse through the available web parts (e.g. Newsfeed, Calendar, Tasks) and select one that fits your needs.
Step 6: Configure Your Web Parts
Once you’ve added a web part, you can configure its settings by clicking on the “Edit” button. For example, if you add a newsfeed web part, you can set it to display news from a specific channel or list.
Step 7: Test and Refine Your Site
Now that your site is starting to take shape, test it out! Browse through each page and make sure everything looks good. If something’s not quite right, go back and refine your design as needed.
And that’s it! You now have a basic SharePoint site designed using the built-in tools. Of course, there are many more advanced features you can explore to take your site to the next level, but this tutorial should give you a solid foundation to work from. Happy designing!
